Dr. Rebecca Sanders (she/her), Founder and Principal Investigator of Safe Streets Research & Consulting, LLC, brings 17 years of academic and consulting experience analyzing and addressing pedestrian, bicyclist, e-scooter, and motorist safety, behavior, and mobility through crash analysis, survey research, and design. She has published groundbreaking research on bicyclist and driver roadway design preferences, pedestrian safety at night, pedestrian fatality hotspots, and e-scooter behaviors and user preferences. Her recent work further explores pedestrian safety at night, pedestrian crossing preferences, pedestrian and bicyclist safety along arterials, and pedestrian exposure estimation and safety modeling to influence national policy and design guidance for the National Academies of Sciences. Dr. Sanders has significantly contributed to Vision Zero and systemic safety projects across the country, including in Boston, Denver, Seattle, Alexandria, Austin, Portland, and Long Beach, and her work continues to inform safety standards, systemic safety methodologies, and related safety policy. As an appointed member of TRB’s Safety & Operations Section, former Chair of the TRB Bicycle Transportation Committee, and an appointed member of the City of Portland’s Pedestrian Advisory Committees, she blends nationwide insights and local experience with subject matter expertise to identify ways to improve transportation safety for all.
